What you need to know about your child's milk teeth -

WHAT ARE MILK TEETH?
The fact is that a normal and healthy infant has about twenty milk teeth as a part of his/her primary dentition below the gum pads within the dental arch but after birth an infant usually has no teeth seen in the oral cavity. When the child reaches about five years of age these milk teeth start exfoliating to allow the eruption of the permanent teeth. These teeth that loosen and shed are also called deciduous teeth for the same reason. The exfoliation of milk teeth continues till the age of eleven to twelve thus they form an important part of the child's functional apparatus till this age.
CARE & IMPORTANCE

Even though they are temporary , milk teeth require greater care as they are more prone to caries & decay leading to their early destruction.Using feeding bottles without a physiologic nipple leading to sucking instead of suckling is the main cause as the anterior teeth are exposed to the sugars such as lactose present in milk for a long duration of time.
PREVENTION OF EARLY CHILDHOOD CARIES-
- Use a feeding bottle with a physiologic nipple.
-Stick to breast feeding if possible as it also delivers many antibodies & immunoglobulins improving your childs immunity.
- Avoid feeding your child sugars, fruit juices & soft sticky food on a regular basis.
- Use a fluoride containing tooth paste eg Colgate junior.
- Rinsing the mouth after every meal also helps prevent decay & caries.
- Visit a pediatric dentist when the kid is one year old and for a checkup once in six months.
